Holyoke Heritage State Park begins its summer tour season with a walk to Robert E. Barrett Fishway at the Holyoke Dam. Learn about the fish that migrate up the Connecticut River while observing them through viewing windows. Two “lifts” carry fish to the river above the dam, allowing them to continue their journey.
Discussions about the dam and its influence on the city of Holyoke will be facilitated along the way to and from the Fishway. Bring binoculars to view birds at the river – bald eagles, cormorants, and herons may be seen – and cameras to take photos of the historic buildings that line the canals. The walking tour is approximately 2 miles.
Meet at Holyoke Heritage State Park at 221 Appleton Street, Holyoke, MA. Please call 413-534-1723 with any questions.
Suitable for families with children 8 and older (siblings welcome). Please bring water and appropriate footwear. Heavy downpour cancels.
