ITALIAN CULTURAL CENTER’S FRIDAY NIGHT AT THE ITALIAN CINEMA
FRIDAY, MARCH 6, 2020 AT 6:00 PM
The Italian Cultural Center of Western Massachusetts wishes to announce that we are showing our first spring movie of 2020 of our ‘Friday Night at the Italian Cinema’ celebration of Italian movies with the 2013 film, The Mafia Only Kills in the Summer (La Mafia Uccide Solo D’Estate) by Director Pierfrancesco “Pif” Diliberto. It will be shown on Friday, March 6 at 6:30. It is in Italian with English subtitles.
Inspired by real events, this is a black comedy is about 20 years of history of Sicily from 1970’s to 1990’s, mocking Mafia bosses and restoring the generosity of the heroes of Antimafia. It's focused on Arturo, a young boy who grows up in Palermo and tries to conquer his beloved Flora.
There’s an oddly sympathetic mix of sentimentality and black comedy in this nostalgic coming-of-age picture about growing up in 1970’s Palermo, home of the mafia, and some brave unsung guys who stood up to them. Arturo becomes a reporter and as both a child and clueless journalist, finds himself coming across real-life cops and officials: fictional encounters that the director intends as a tribute to the honest, brave people who stood up to the mafia – because these are the very people who were murdered by the mobsters, and who have plaques up in their honor all over the city. It’s a winning and likable film. The movie won numerous awards including awards for Best Director, Best Comedy and Best Story. The movie ended up having 15 wins and 20 nominations in all.
The doors will open at 6:00 and the movie will start at 6:30. The suggested donation is $3.00 for members and $6.00 for non-members. As part of your movie experience, you will have a choice of beverage and a snack.
